At American Ambulance Service, Inc., we are committed to providing the highest quality medical transportation services to our patients.

Our team of dedicated professionals lives and works by fundamental values such as honesty, integrity, and pride in everything we do. Ambulance transportation is broken down into a few categories, unscheduled and scheduled medical transportation. Each of these categories is further broken down into levels of service; Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS). ALS has sub categories that include Paramedic Intercept and Critical Care Transport.

When you dial 911 and call for emergency help, an ambulance comes and picks you up. The level of service arriving is dependent on several determinants that are derived from Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) protocols.

BLS – Basic Life Support

Our Basic Life Support (BLS) Ambulance authorities are issued and inspected by the Connecticut Department of Public Health Office of Emergency Medical Services. Our BLS ambulances are staffed with two Emergency Medical Technicians certified in pre-hospital care and equipped to provide basic emergency care. Their capabilities include, but are not limited to: monitoring vital signs, patient assessment, airway management, oxygen and other misc. medication delivery, application of dressings and bandages, splinting of extremities, spinal immobilization, and administering CPR including the use of an AED.

ALS – Advanced Life Support

Our Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ambulance authorities are issued and inspected by the Connecticut Department of Public Health Office of Emergency Medical Services. Our ALS ambulances are staffed with a minimum of one Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and one Paramedic. 

Paramedics are licensed healthcare professionals in pre-hospital care and their capabilities include, but are not limited to: advanced airway management, cardiac monitoring and defibrillation, IV administration, and administration of select life-saving medications.

Paramedic Intercept

This level of service is provided by a team member trained as a Paramedic. An intercept is performed when American is requested to respond along with another EMS organization that operates at the BLS level. An American Paramedic will meet up, “intercept”, with the transporting BLS organization and will get on their ambulance to provide ALS care for the patient until they arrive at the destination hospital.

Critical Care Transport

Critical Care Transport is a distinct level of care that is provided to patients who have the potential for life-threatening clinical instability. This level of care requires provider knowledge, skills, equipment, and the ability to handle the added challenge of transport. Critical care transports require a high level of medical oversight and direction because of the patient’s complex medical condition.
