About

When an athlete suffers a brain injury or a neurological condition, they need a quick and accurate diagnosis followed by effective, personalized care so they can safely return to play.

In Connecticut, the only neurologist with advanced training in sports neurology is Dr. Stephanie Alessi-LaRosa at the Ayer Neuroscience Institute Sports Neurology Program, one of the few such programs in the country.

Working collaboratively with specialists in sports medicine, physical therapy, athletic training and neuropsychology, Dr. Alessi-LaRosa evaluates and effectively manages sports-related injuries such as concussion and peripheral nerve injuries in patients age six and older. She also helps patients who have neurologic conditions such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and migraine compete safely in sports.

In addition to athletes, the Sports Neurology Program team helps laborers, pilots, teachers, weekend warriors and others with neurologic injuries that prevent them from performing at a high level at work. Dr. Alessi-LaRosa also sees children age six and up with suspected concussion and those age 14 and older with peripheral nerve injuries.

As part of the Ayer Neuroscience Institute, Sports Neurology Program patients also have access to a full range of experts and the most advanced imaging technology available when needed.
