Frequently Asked Questions

What is a registered dietitian?

Registered dietitians (RDs) are credentialed food and nutrition experts with a degree from an accredited dietetics program who completed a supervised practice requirement, passed a national exam and continued professional development throughout their careers.

All nutrition counseling available through Hartford HealthCare is provided by RDs credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration and certified by the State of Connecticut.

What should I/my patients expect from nutrition counseling?

Patients should expect a confidential consultation in a comfortable, private environment. Our expert RDs start with a comprehensive nutrition assessment of a patient’s food habits, lifestyle, cultural background and health history. The dietitian will then work with the patient to develop a fully personalized nutrition plan tailored to their individual preferences and goals. The RD will communicate with the referring provider as needed to keep them up to date. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are provided as appropriate to support healthy, sustainable lifestyle change.

How do I schedule an appointment?

A physician referral is required before scheduling a nutrition appointment.

For Providers: Outpatient nutrition services are available through most hospitals in the HHC system, as well as several HHC MG locations. View a listing of current medical nutrition therapy locations and their areas of specialty. For further guidance in directing your referral, please contact your physician liaison.

Does insurance cover nutrition counseling?

Nutrition services are covered by many insurance plans. We advise patients to speak with their insurance company before scheduling an appointment to understand their coverage.
