Holiday Cranberry Nut Cheese Balls

December 12, 2025

There’s always that one holiday appetizer that disappears long before dinner — and this year, it might be these festive cranberry nut cheese balls. They’re full of bright, seasonal flavor, with a nutritional profile that makes them a smart choice for everyone at the table.

“Healthy eating doesn’t have to mean skipping the foods you love,” says Samantha Oldman, RD, with Hartford HealthCare Medical Group. “When you build a recipe around thoughtful swaps, you get something delicious with much more nutritional value.”

Here’s what makes each ingredient shine.

1. Low-fat cheeses

Cream cheese is the foundation of this recipe — and using the low-fat version is an easy way to cut saturated fat while keeping everything rich and creamy.

“Low-fat cream cheese still gives you that smooth texture people expect,” says Oldman. “It’s a simple swap that reduces calories and fat without changing the flavor.”

Because it’s so decadent, you can use less of it and still get all the flavor.

“And the same goes for the white cheddar,” says Oldman. “While sharp cheddar can be high in saturated fat, this low-fat white cheddar creates a more balanced base with protein and calcium.”

Bonus: white cheddar adds a subtle tang and a gorgeous color contrast to the cranberries and herbs.

2. Unsweetened dried cranberries

This recipe calls for chopped dried cranberries — but here’s the key: choose unsweetened when possible. They give you festive color and natural sweetness without the added sugars found in most packaged versions.

“Cranberries offer antioxidants and fiber that can support digestion,” says Oldman. “Using unsweetened versions helps keep the balance of the dish without unnecessary sugars.”

Their tartness pairs perfectly with creamy cheese and crunchy nuts.

3. Pecans and other nuts

Instead of using breading or crushed crackers, these cheese bites get their texture from chopped pecans.

“Nuts like pecans offer unsaturated fats, fiber and protein, which help keep you satisfied,” says Oldman. “They add crunch and richness without relying on heavily processed ingredients.”

4. Fresh herbs

Thyme, rosemary or parsley — whichever you choose, fresh herbs elevate the flavor instantly.

“Herbs add complexity to a dish without extra calories or salt,” says Oldman. “They also offer anti-inflammatory benefits, which makes them a great addition during a season that can be heavy on rich foods.”

These cranberry nut cheese balls are also beautiful. The finished bites look like they came straight off a catering platter.
